Overview
Wanneer kruimeldief Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey jr.) op de vlucht slaat na een mislukte overval, loopt hij per ongeluk bij een casting voor een misdaadfilm naar binnen. Zo wordt hij meegenomen naar Hollywood voor een echte screentest en wordt daar door zijn producer voorgesteld als het nieuwste 'snoepje van de maand'. Ter voorbereiding op de screentest moet Harry meelopen met privé-detective Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer), door de meesten Gay Perry genoemd vanwege zijn homoseksuele geaardheid. Als crimineel die zich voordoet als acteur die zich voordoet als detective komt Harry in contact met Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan). Via deze weinig succesvolle actrice raken Harry en Gay Perry betrokken bij een moordzaak die hun eigen levens wel eens in gevaar zou kunnen brengen.
