Morgan Freeman vuelve a interpretar el personaje de Alex Cross, que ya había recreado en 'El coleccionista de amantes', un detective de policía, psicólogo y novelista de éxito del distrito central de Washington que ha renunciado a seguir practicando juegos mentales con los criminales... hasta que un metódico depredador, Gary Soneji, comete un atrevido secuestro y provoca que Cross se involucre dejando una prueba del caso en su buzón de correo. Soneji no busca ningún tipo de rescate, sino algo mucho más importante: un lugar en los libros de historia, quiere que Cross escriba sobre él después de haber cometido el crimen del siglo. Soneji planifica cada uno de sus movimientos como una araña que tiende su red. Y tanto Cross como la agente del servicio secreto Jezzie Flannigan emprenden una carrera contrarreloj para tratar de detenerle.
