Policjant Ben Shockley (Clint Eastwood) otrzymuje zadanie eskortowania z Las Vegas do Phoenix koronnego świadka w sprawie kryminalnej. Po przybyciu do stolicy hazardu okazuje się, że jego podopieczną jest młoda kobieta - Gus Mally (Sondra Locke). Śmiertelnie przerażona dziewczyna usiłuje przekonać Bena o grożącym im niebezpieczeństwie.
