Danielle est une maman qui élève seule sa fille Audrey depuis que son mari Colby, commandant chez les Marines, a disparu pendant une manœuvre puis a été déclaré mort. Depuis quelques mois, elle fréquente Pierce, un ami de longue date. Mais lorsqu’il la demande en mariage quelques jours avant Noël, Danielle commence à voir des signes qui lui rappellent Colby. Noël est un moment particulier, puisque tous les événements liés à l’histoire d’amour entre Danielle et Colby ont eu lieu à cette période. Et la petite Audrey, qui se pose de plus en plus de questions, demande à Danielle de remplacer l’histoire du soir par une anecdote sur son père. Petit à petit, Danielle se persuade que Colby n’est pas mort mais qu’il est prisonnier quelque part.
